TiPA Awards

When, at last year’s TiPA Awards judging in San Francisco, we all happily voted for the 2017 deliberations to take place in Havana, nobody was really thinking about the logistics. Even with some recent relaxations relating to foreign tourism to Cuba, it was going to be quite a challenge to get the right visas for entry for 30 journalists from all around the world. Well, for starters, let’s not call ourselves journalists, even if we’re humble tech writers and have absolutely nothing to do with politics. But Havana… it’s a photographers’ paradise and it’s not going to stay this way for ever. We had to go.

As it happens, travel from Australia proved the most challenging, mainly because Cuba couldn’t really be much further away no matter whether you decide to travel east or west. And while it would have made life easier to hop on one of the direct flights from the USA that are now available, the Cuban consulate in Canberra was having none of that. Fly direct from the USA, I was told, and you’ll have to get your tourist card in the US. Way too risky to wait until I landed in Los Angeles, so a detour via Mexico was the best option, but it meant virtually two days of travelling… mainly to build in time for any delays, particularly given the tales concerning problems entering the USA that were circulating at the time, never mind Cuba. In the end, LAX was busy but efficient and friendly, while at Havana’s international airport – admittedly after arriving close to midnight so things were pretty quiet immigration and customs were a breeze. Most notable was that the entry booths were all manned which isn’t actually quite the right verb – by attractive young women in miniskirts or tight trousers. Welcome to Cuba!

Early the next morning, throwing open the curtains in the hotel room revealed why it had been all worth the effort. The city is a glorious jumble of architectural styles from Spanish colonial to Soviet minimalism – a lot of it in a state of advanced dilapidation, but jauntily defying it by being painted in bright colours. The same is true of the cars, which are predominantly either 1950s American or 1970s Russian with a smattering of British and European classics thrown in. Originality isn’t a consideration when you’re simply trying to keep something running well beyond its use-by date so there’s a fair few mangy mongrels among them, but their days are now numbered as an increasing number of new cars arrive from China and South Korea.

Not surprisingly, the immediate reaction was to grab a camera and hit the streets.

But before we could go out to play, there was work to do.

Prior to the awards judging, TIPA holds its general assembly it’s like an annual general meeting – which takes care of association business, but also looks at just how the camera business is tracking globally. Things are definitely looking up from 2016 which was badly affected by Sony’s main sensor factory in Japan being off-line for nearly six months. Products were delayed or even cancelled and global sales suffered accordingly, including in Australia. Last year’s Photokina proved to be the turning point and it’s been a return to normal service with a steady flow of new cameras since then.

Conditions continue to be challenging in the magazine business too, although special interest publications such as photography titles are still in a strong position compared to the general media. Of course, even in big markets like the USA, we’re still small fry, but being very precisely targeted and with extremely loyal readerships (thank you, everybody), circulations are mostly holding up well. However, TIPA did experience a couple of casualties over the past 12 months and this opened up the possibility of accepting new members to maintain the desired maximum number of 30. Consequently, the UK’s Photography News and Italy’s FOTOCult were admitted as members, but more significantly The Luminous Landscape became the Association’s first non-magazine (i.e. exclusively on-line) member. TLL is, of course, extremely well-respected and authoritative and, in many ways, the most magazine-like of the major online photography sites. Given TIPA’s strict rules regarding editorial independence and corporate governance, it’s likely that only a handful of other photo Websites will qualify for membership in the future should a vacancy arise.

The TIPA Awards are judged over 40 categories which are continually being fine-tuned to keep pace with changes in the industry. This year’s changes included a revising of the categories for D-SLRs – returning to just one for professional-level models – and fixed-lens cameras plus the introduction of new awards for digital image processing devices, 360-degree cameras and photo-level smartphones. As always, TIPA’s Technical Committee did a fine job of whittling down the extensive long list of eligible candidates to a more workable shortlist, although with 40 categories this still covers a lot of products. After we’ve all made our inputs and comments, a final shortlist is presented for judging by the assembled editors.

As I’ve noted in previous reports – 40 closely-contested product categories and 30 highlyopinionated judges with a range of nationally-inherited temperaments; what could possibly go wrong? As it often happens, very little save for some debate – always civilised, only occasionally spirited – and finally, a selection of 40 worthy winners.

Overleaf is the at-a-glance list of the best for 2017 and then on the following pages are edited excerpts from the judges’ citations (which are available to read in full on the TIPA Website at www.tipa. com). Note that all the pixel counts quoted here are for a sensor’s effective resolution.

PRoFoto tuRBoChaRGeS the B1

PioNEEr of TTl flash control in pro-level lighting equipment, Profoto has returned to the product which started it all – the B1 batterypowered Monobloc – and extensively updated it to create the B1X.

The new version has a more powerful LED modelling lamp – now equivalent to a 130 watts halogen source – and higher capacity battery which delivers 50 percent more energy and an extended HSS flash power range. The new lithium-ion battery pack remains the same size and weight as before, but can now deliver up to 325 full-power flashes (and obviously a lot more at lower outputs).

The B1X retains a maximum flash power output of 500 joules with an adjustable range over nine stops, adjustable in 1/10-stop increments. This nine-stop range is now maintained when also shooting in the HSS (high speed sync) mode at shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 second.

The fastest flash duration is 1/19,000 second and recycling times range from 0.05 to 1.9 seconds. As before, the B1X can operate without any cables at all, with wireless TTL exposure control via the optional Air Remote controllers which are now available dedicated for Canon, Nikon, Sony and Olympus TTL flash systems. The Air Remotes have an operating range of up to 300 metres.

The B1X weighs just three kilograms, including the battery pack, and its design incorporates a built-in reflector to give more compact external dimensions. However, it can also be fitted with a wide selection of Profoto light shapers and two new hard reflectors have been added to the OCF (Off Camera Flash line). The new OCF Zoom Reflector is a compact accessory – so it will still fit into the B1X’s case while still attached to the monobloc – but it effectively doubles the effective light output at the two-metre range. The larger OCF Magnum Reflector increases the effective output further, and these new accessories can also be used on the B1, B2, D1 and D2 flashes.

Profoto lighting products are distributed in Australia by C.R. Kennedy & Company.

AT A rouGH count, Sony is launching one new FE mount lens per month at the moment which is another indication of just how serious it is about getting to the top of the ILC market.

Læs om kreativ portrætfoto

Joining the 100-400mm telezoom announced along with the A9, are two wide-angle zooms the FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM and the FE 12-24mm f4.0 G. Like the 100-400mm, the 16-35mm is a high-performance ‘G Master’ model which are designed to compete with the likes of Canon’s L Series models. Both the new wide-angle zooms feature fully weather-proofed external constructions and Sony’s ‘Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave’ (DDSSM) autofocusing motors which have been specially designed to meet the demands of internal focusing using large-diameter elements.

The 16-35mm’s 16-elements optical construction includes two ‘XA’ types – extreme aspherical – one of which Sony claims is “the largest XA element ever produced”. The XA elements plus three additional aspherical types correct for distortion and also optimise centre-to-corner sharpness. Two extra-low dispersion elements correct for chromatic aberrations. This lens employs two DDSSM piezoelectric drives in a floating focusing system to deliver faster autofocusing. The 16-35mm has an 11-bladed diaphragm to give smoother out-of-focus effects and supplements its weather-proofed barrel with a fluorine coating on the exposed surface of the front element to repel moisture and grease. It also has Sony’s ‘Nano AR’ multi-coatings to reduce ghosting and flare.

The 12-24mm has a 17-elements optical construction which includes four aspherical types to correct for distortion and a combination of three extra-low (ED) dispersion types and one ‘Super ED’ type to counter chromatic aberrations. It employs ‘Nano AR’ multi-coatings to minimise flare and ghosting. Other features include a seven-blade diaphragm, customisable focus hold button and aluminium alloy barrel tubes. The minimum focusing distance is 28 cm.

With the arrival of these two new zooms (prices yet to be announced), Sony’s FE mount system now spans 12mm to 800mm (albeit achieved via a teleconverter) which is quite an achievement for a system that’s not yet four years old. For more information visit www.sony.com.au

place in interchangeable lens camera sales in the USA, Sony intends to keep up the momentum with the much-anticipated launch of its first A9 series full-35mm format mirrorless body.

Similar in styling to the A7 models, the A9 is specifically targeted at the top-of-the-line ‘sports’ D-SLRs, so the emphasis is on speed which is delivered via a new ‘stacked’ back-illuminated CMOS sensor, powerful ‘Bionz X’ processor, a significantly bigger buffer memory and 693-point phase-detection autofocusing. The sensor’s stacked design enables a quicker read-out which Sony claims is 20 times faster than that of the A7 II’s imager. As a result the A9 can shoot at up to 20 fps at its full effective resolution of 24.2 megapixels and with continuous AF/ AE adjustment. More importantly, there’s no viewfinder black-out at this speed. The maximum burst length for JPEG/large/extra-fine capture is quoted at 362 frames and around 240 frames with 14-bit RAW capture (where there’s the option of losslessly compressed or uncompressed settings). The new sensor has a sensitivity range equivalent to ISO 100 to 51,200 which can be expanded to ISO 50 and 204,800.

Exposure metering is via a sensor-based 1200-zone system with multi-segment, centreweighted average, full average, spot (two sizes) and highlight-biased measurements. The camera’s focal plane shutter has a speed range of 301/8000 second with the option of using sensor shutter – for silent shooting – which gives a top speed of 1/32,000 second. An upgraded sensorshift image stabilisers operates over five axes and enables up to five stops of correction for camera shake (depending on the lens focal length).

The A9’s magnesium alloy bodyshell is weather sealed and has a tilt-adjustable RGBW

monitor screen with a resolution of 1.44 megadots and touch controls, including ‘Touch AF’. The EVF uses an OLED-type display with a resolution of 3.68 megadots and a refresh rate of 120 fps which eliminates blackout with continuous shooting. Magnification is 0.78x (35mm equivalent) and the eyepoint is 23 mm. Dual slots are provided for SD and MemoryStick memory cards (each has dual compatibility) with one slot providing support for UHS-II speed SDXC devices.

Not surprisingly, the Sony A9 is also designed as a video camera and can record UHD footage (3840×2160 pixels) at 25 fps in the XAVC S 4K format, giving a bit rate of 100 Mbps. Significantly, 4K footage is recorded using the full sensor area and without any pixel binning to optimise image quality. Full HD footage be recorded at 100, 50 or 25 fps in the XAVC HD format with the option of using the AVCHD or MP4 formats at 50 or 25 fps. The camera can output both 4K and 2K video via its HDMI connector while also recording internally. Built-in stereo microphones are supplemented with a 3.5 mm stereo audio input for connecting an external mic (an optional XLR adaptor is available) plus there’s a 3.5 mm stereo audio output for connecting headphones.

The A9 has both WiFi (with NFC) and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless image transfer and remote camera control via smart devices.

Announced along with the new camera is the FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS telephoto zoom which joins Sony’s growing line-up of high-performance G Master models.

The Sony A9 body is priced at $6999 in Australia and is available now.

The new 100-400mm E-mount telezoom is expected to be available locally during July and is priced at $3999.

Information That Will Help You With Arts And Crafts

Information That Will Help You With Arts And Crafts

Men and women of all descriptions love to participate in arts and crafts, as do children of all ages. There is virtually no limit to the creative outlets that can be found under this category of endeavor. Continue reading for some terrific tips about making the most of your own arts and crafts hobby.

Focus on one thing at a time. Sometimes you want to try out a million different things. However, a lot of projects end up unfinished that way. Take the time to complete one before doing another. This will better your chances of finishing.

Collect items from around your yard for your arts and crafts collection. There are so many natural things that might be around that’ll come in very useful for an upcoming project. Some of the most popular things you’ll find outdoors include pine cones, smooth pebbles, and even colorful leaves.

When you are creating art projects, do not worry too much about whether or not others will like the finished project. This is something that will put a lot of undue stress on you and it will increase the chances of you making a mistake. It is a good idea to relax and go with the flow.

Brick and mortar stores are great when searching for arts and crafts supplies. One of the largest retailers is Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby carries fabric, beading supplies, yarns and floral supplies. Additionally, they are the perfect go-to retailer for art supplies with the wide selection of canvases, paints and brushes.

Ornamentea offers crafters the perfect place to find all of their jewelry making supplies. Ornamentea offers a wide range of colors in their leather cording at an affordable price. You will also find a wide selection of tutorials to help you take your jewelry making to the next level.

Clean your mosaic. To eliminate a cloudy appearance from a dried mosaic, spray on some glass cleaner, and wipe clean. The mortar powder is hard to get out without it and you don’t need it gumming up the finish of the final project.

If you love sculpting, but have run out of ideas or are stumped about what to create, get a blindfold. People who have some skills with sculpting can create amazing pieces when they simply use their minds and hands! Set yourself up as you normally would, and just put a blindfold on, or close your eyes and let your imagination go.

Before you start using something new in your crafting, make sure you understand what cleanup will entail. This is especially true for paints, glues, and other liquid substances. Some need special cleaners to remove them if they get spilled. Others need immediate action if you want to keep something from staining. Know what action you need to take if the worst happens.

To keep your painting hobby from taking over an entire room, consider purchasing a collapsible easel. That way, when you are done working on your masterpiece for the day, the easel goes right into the closet, along with your canvas. That leaves your bedroom free for the rest of the day.

When you are finished painting for the day, make sure to clean your brushes thoroughly. Paint that is left in a brush dries and hardens the bristles. The next time you want to use them, the stiffer brush will not make as subtle strokes as it did, and it will be hard to keep that pure color.

Be mindful of weather conditions when it comes to arts and crafts. A rainy day might seem like the perfect time to do arts and crafts indoors, either alone or with the kids. However, if there are steps like spray painting involved, those are usually better done outside unless you have a well-ventilated garage.

When you are picking a subject for crafting or artwork, make sure that it is something you truly enjoy. Your creativity comes from the heart, and the result of your work will show that. If do not like a subject very much, that may adversely affect the quality of your handiwork.

Sandpaper can help you make any object look used. If you are looking for a unique vintage look, polish your object with some sandpaper. You can create interesting textures by using different grains or not polishing the object evenly. You can even use the sandpaper after applying a coat of paint for a unique look.

If you are interested in quilting as a favored arts and crafts activity, consider perusing your local fabric store’s selection of fabric fat quarters. These small pieces of colorful fabric may initially seem somewhat useless, but they can add all sorts of variety and interest to your finished products. In this way, you can enhance your quilts without spending a fortune.

Try buying all of your crafts supplies with other crafters to save money. If you know others that are into doing arts and crafts, you can go on craft shopping trips to buy supplies in bulk. This will help everyone save money on supplies, and you may get to try some new items in your projects.

You can use your arts and crafts skills to make cards for all occasions. Once you have made your card the way you want it to look, bring it to a printing shop. Yes, you are making the card yourself, but you are giving it a more professional look this way.

If you are looking to make a stained glass picture, sketch out your idea first. Then you can find the pieces of glasses that come together to make your image whole. If you don’t visualize the whole picture first, you won’t end up with a unified whole for your audience to appreciate.

The great thing about arts and crafts as a hobby is the fact that almost anyone can take part. Making items of real beauty and utility is a terrific way to spend time and can also bring great joy. With any luck, you now have a better feel for how to maximize your own experience.

Leave Competitors In The Dust With These Seo Tips

Leave Competitors In The Dust With These Seo Tips

The best way to grow your business is to maximize your websites search engine optimization. There are many simple tips that will help you make your website easily accessible in searches. Follow the advice in this article to ensure you are bringing a broad audience to your business home on the web.

You can improve your websites search engine optimization by keeping up-to-date with the way search engines index websites. Search engines are always refining the algorithms and procedures they use to evaluate websites and filter out spam. By researching developments in this area you can ensure you are always doing all you can to improve your site’s position on search engine results pages.

Giving away free things can help with search engine optimization. The more content that is free, the better chances you have of people linking to your website so they can share the information. Free things are always attractive to people. You can include free tips, software, samples, tutorials, e-books, coupons or even have a contest with prizes.

Check your bounce rate and lower it as much as possible. Your bounce rate is how quickly someone clicks into your site and then leaves. Search engines interpret a high bounce rate as a signal that your website was not helpful when searching on that keyword. This damages your standing in the SERPS.

To better optimize your site for search engines, you should place keywords in the title tag for every post. Most search engines place more importance on titles than other types of contents. This means that using effective keywords is your title is one of the best ways to draw in traffic from search engines.

One of the best ways to get your site ranked high with the search engines is to place your keyword phrase in the domain name. With search engine optimization, your keyword being placed in the domain name greatly increases your ranking. It may even have enough impact to place you in the first page.

As a general rule of thumb, search engine spiders will ignore sites that have duplicate pages. Having duplicate pages may give you more keyword content, but it may also get you ignored. This can certainly backfire. Make sure each of your pages are unique and original so that you will be found.

Insert a keyword phrase on the URL to your website. Search engines will assign a higher value to your URL when they are determining the sites to spit out on searches. The more popular the keyword phrase of your URL, the higher frequency that your site will appear on searches.

Give the title tag much thought. The eye is immediately drawn to the title tag when it arrives on a website. It needs to describe your content using relevant keywords. Don’t make it long, though.

Utilize as many free business listings as possible to increase your SEO. This is essentially advertising that doesn’t cut into your budget, and your search ranking will benefit from the increased traffic these sites drive to your website. Likewise, your business and sales are likely to increase as well.

Keep your site updated with new content on a regular basis. Sites that are consistently being updated are ranked higher by the search engines than sites that are static and unchanging. Adding new content also benefits you by providing more information for your readers and will keep people coming back.

Add your keyword phrase into the site URL if you are unable to get a domain name that includes them. The engines read the URL and they place value on the words found there. You want your keyword to be found as quickly as possible by the engines to increase your rankings.

Create a link wheel to increase your SEO. A link wheel involves writing 10 articles about the keywords you want to associate with your links. In each article, place a link to your website and a link to one of the other articles. You then submit each of those articles to a different article directory. In this way, every article and every article directory links directly to your website, as well as, to each other.

Choosing the right keywords can greatly influence your ranking in search engine listings and give you an edge in internet marketing. By adjusting the wording a little bit you can have a higher search engine listing. If you are bidding on advertisement keywords, you can gain a substantial savings by changing the words until you find a combination that will still generate visitors for your site.

Make sure when writing a title for your blog post that you keep Search Engine Optimization in mind. If you are writing a post about visiting Japan, don’t just title it, “Visiting Japan.” Use something like “Traveling to Japan with three small children.” You want to keep in mind the different keywords people might put into a search.

Validating your HTML is all well and good, but don’t forget about your CSS! A key part of SEO is having your website appear as intended. Otherwise, your monetization techniques may not even show up at all! Double check every element of your website, making sure that it appears to everyone in the same way.

Make sure that keywords are in your HTML. Once you have strong keywords for your website, it is important to make sure that they are easy for search engines to find. Put them in the HTML. Put them in title and description tags. Make sure you include them in any blogs or online videos that link to your site as well.

For the best SEO, be sure to use a domain name that contains your best target keywords. You will need to make your website pop up in the google search results. Build a really solid website and use search engine optimization to get it found. If other local businesses in your area don’t have this, you will stand out like a shining star from the crowd.

The most important thing to do is learn about what search engine optimization does and why it works. Then make the necessary changes to your blog or site.

When marketing a product online, make sure your site is as useable and accessible as possible. If your website has problems with the code or can’t be viewed by certain browsers, you will lose visitors and therefore sales. Very few people will go to the trouble of switching browsers just to use your site.

The importance of linking out can not be overstated. Creating a resource page that carries weighted links to related sites that are rich with keywords and phrases carry extra weight with search engines. Make the extra effort to garner these resource links to increase the weight and improve the ranking.

There are many different types of meta tag, including one for keywords – but up-to-date webmasters rarely use it. Do not waste time packing the keyword tag; focus on more important areas.

Build contextual links throughout your website. Interlinking your website’s internal pages gives Google and other search engines clues to what your pages are about and helps guarantee that your internal pages share in higher rankings. To make this easier, many modern content management systems offer plug-ins that detect contextual link opportunities and automatically build them.

Learn about the different types of external links that could increase your websites search engine rankings. The four main types are reciprocal links, directory links, paid one-way links and natural one-way links. Search engines rank each of these links differently, so educate yourself on the pros and cons of each before beginning your external link campaign.

If you want your site to rank higher in search engines, writing great content should be your highest priority when developing your site. You can add keywords until you’re blue in the face, but, if your content is mediocre, people will not keep visiting your site and search engines will not deem your site valuable.

A good way to help with search engine optimization is to switch from AP style to “SEO style” for all references in the body of your pages. The repetition of keywords and density play a role in where your page ends up on searches so veering away from the stringent rules of AP style will help increase views of your page.
